Family mediation and settlement in North York, Toronto

Sepideh Legal Services offers family mediation and settlement support for families in North York, Toronto and the GTA. Family mediation is a voluntary process in which a neutral mediator helps people discuss separation-related issues and explore agreements. The parties—not the mediator—decide whether to settle. Contact Sepideh to discuss suitability, the scope of support and fees.

What can families discuss in mediation?

  • Parenting arrangements, parenting time and communication about children.
  • Child support, spousal support and the financial information needed for discussions.
  • Property, debts and other practical arrangements arising from separation.
  • Proposed settlement terms to take to each party’s independent legal adviser.

What should you ask before starting?

  1. Explain your situation and ask whether mediation is suitable. Raise any safety concerns, family violence, pressure or imbalance privately before joint discussions.
  2. Confirm the mediator’s training, the process, confidentiality arrangements, fees and what documents or financial disclosure may be needed.
  3. Discuss the issues with a neutral facilitator. Either party may need time to obtain advice; no settlement or outcome is guaranteed.
  4. Obtain independent legal advice about proposed terms and any separation agreement before signing. Confirm who is authorized to draft or review legal documents.

Mediation is different from legal advice

A mediator does not act as either party’s legal adviser and does not replace a family lawyer. Ontario recommends independent legal advice before and throughout mediation. A written summary of discussions is not a substitute for advice about your rights, obligations or the enforceability of a separation agreement. Sepideh is described on this site as a licensed paralegal; no family-law specialist or FLSP authorization is claimed.

Questions about family mediation in Ontario

What is family mediation in Ontario?

Family mediation is a voluntary negotiation process supported by a neutral third party. It can help people discuss separation issues such as parenting, support and property. A mediator helps communication but does not decide the outcome for the parties.

Ontario: family mediation
Does a family mediator replace a lawyer?

No. A mediator is neutral and does not replace either party’s independent legal adviser. Ontario recommends obtaining independent legal advice before and throughout mediation so you understand your rights and obligations.

Ontario: family mediation
Can mediation help with a separation agreement?

Mediation can help parties discuss proposed settlement terms. Each party should obtain independent legal advice before signing a separation agreement and confirm who is authorized to draft or review it. An agreement’s effect depends on its terms and the circumstances; mediation does not guarantee enforceability.

Ontario: family mediation
Is mediation suitable when there are safety concerns?

Mediation is not suitable for every situation. Tell the provider privately about family violence, coercion or other safety concerns, and ask about screening and safeguards before agreeing to participate. Obtain advice about other options if you cannot negotiate safely or freely.

How much does family mediation cost?

Private mediation fees vary with the provider and the work involved. Ask Sepideh for the scope, fee structure and what is included before starting. Ontario also describes court-connected and subsidized mediation options; eligibility and availability must be checked with the relevant provider.
